Steel Pulse – Legendary UK Reggae

Steel Pulse is considered by many to be one of the best reggae bands of all time. They’re certainly one of the most popular.

Hailing from Birmingham England, Steel Pulse originally formed in 1975, featuring Basil Gabbidon on guitar, Ronal McQueen on bass, and David Hinds the famous dreadlocked singer on lead vocals and guitar. Hinds was also the songwriter and has been the member of the great reggae band that most people remember today.

Early Days and Origins of Steel Pulse

Their first album was called Kibudu, Mansetta annd Abuku, on the Dip label, followed by Nyah Love on the Anchor label. Steel Pulse songs espoused over Rastafarian themes, and they worked closely with the burgeoning punk rock scene in the UK and the US throughout the 1970s and 80s. In 1978 they were featured in the first “Rock Against Racism” concert, and also toured with some punk acts of the day.

Later, they began opening shows for Burning Spear, and this helped introduce them to Island Records. It was on Island Records that they released their smash hit “Ku Klux Klan” and it was also under Island Records that the band’s lineup was joined by Selwyn Brown playing keyborads and Steve Nisbett on drums. They released Handsworth Revolution on Island Records, and were becoming quite popular.
Steel Pulse played their first show in the US on the night of Bob Marley’s funeral in Washington DC at the 9:30 Club on May 21, 1981.

After Steel Pulse left Island Records, they moved to the Elektra label, where they released the True Democracy LP. This record contained the popular single entitled “Rally Round” – a reminder of the roots of Africans around the world, through the colors of red, gold and green, and a resonation of Marcus Garvey. On the Elektra label they also released Earth Crisis, and Babylon the Bandit. Eventually David Hinds and Steel Pulse moved on to MCA records where they released State of Emergency.

In 1986 Steel Pulse won a Grammy for Babylon the Bandit and had several other albums nominated for grammys after that point.

Steel Pulse has performed at Reggae on the River, Reggae Sunsplash, Glastonbury, and too many other festivals to count. They of course also performed hundreds of shows at local venues around the world over the years.

Currently Steel Pulse is still performing live and is working on a new LP to be released in 2010.
