Matisyahu – Pure Reggae “I-Ses”

Matisyahu was born Matthew Paul Miller on 30 Jun 1979. His name is Ashkenazi Hibrew pronunciation of the name Matthew, and sometimes Mattathias. Matisyahu is also known by some to be a sudonym for the 2nd Century BC high priest Maccabees.

Musicall, Maitsyahu is known to mix reggae, soulful hip-hop, and sometimes grungy styles with traditional and religious Jewish philosophy, prayers and themes.

Matisyahu gained widespread popularity, in part, when he scored a top-40 hit called “King Without a Crown.” He currently boasts 3 studio albums and one live album, as well as countless remixes and appearances in occasional reggae DJ mixes.

Early Live of Matisyahu

Born in West Chester PA, young Matthew was raised as a Reconstructionist Jew. After moving to White Plains NY he attended Hebrew school at a local synagogue. Later, on the west coast, he experimented and performed with a band in Bend Oregon called Soulfori.

Matisyahu is known to have travelled around the US following a popular band called the Grateful Dead, and may be part of the reason he made it from New York all the way out to Oregon with a radical new twist on reggae and Judaism in his head. He also studied Jewish heritage and decided to become an Orthodox Jew and a Baal Teshuva (in 2001).

Matisyahu’s Musical Career

JDub Records is a Jewish non-profit record label promoting Jewish musicians, and it was with them in 2004 that Matisyahu released Shake off the Dust… Arise, a full length-CD. He later joined Phish onstage at Bonnaroo in 2005 and this helped propel him to new hights of popularity.

Matisyahu began touring heavily in 2005 and 2006. He performed shows mostly in the United States and Canada, but also played in Europe and even Israel. In 2006 he opened for Sting. During that period he also released two the CD No Place to Be which included a cover of “Message in a Bottle” the great hit that Sting wrote for The Police many years ago. In 2005 Matisyahu also recorded a live album.

He released his 3rd record in 2009, called Light. In 2009 Matisyahu also released another live recording – this time an EP, called Live at Twist and Shout.

Matisyahu’s Style – Reggae, Rap and Rock, with a Twist

Reggae music has seen many mic chanters in it’s days, but none the likes of Matisyahu. His sweet and rhythmic chanting and singing style is instantly loved by so many of his fans. He says his songs are influenced by the teachings of Judaism and Life. His lyrical style is a blend of dancehall, nigunim (a traditional Hasidic singing style), and a boost of rock and sweetness melodies and overt Divine praise.

Nwer music from Matisyahu represents a change and evolution in his style and genre, but it still has message and melody that will keep audiences returning.
